What you see in the movie is different, if I had to guess how they did it - it looks like they put drops of dirty water on glass and then shot it from underneath then it goes from overexposed at the start of the pulse to underexposed at the end of the pulse – just a guess. For now I "solved" the overlapping blip problem by just making sure the blips don't overlap, but there is an alpha blend function in the library I am using and I will see what that does. In the clip it is just in a continuous 3 stage loop where the aliens get closer in each stage - hard to tell in the clip because it is in a loop. This is running right at 28 fps, you can spin the compass as fast as you want and it has no impact on the frame rate.
